A<\/span>ccording to Elliott (2007), a<\/span> narrative can be defined as a way to organize a sequence of events into a whole so that the significance of each event can be understood through its relation to that whole. In the human sciences, narratives can be defined <\/span>\u201c<\/span>as discou<\/span>r<\/span>ses with a clear sequential order that connect events<\/span> in a meaningful way for a definite audience and thus offer insights about the world and\/or experiences of it\u201d (Hinchman & Hinchman, 1997, p. 16). <\/span>Yet, <\/span>there are <\/span>multiple<\/span> definitions <\/span>for<\/span> narrative<\/span>.<\/span> In the context of social research, the definition adopted here is particularly useful for summarizing three key features of a narrative<\/span>: it <\/span>has a temporal dimension, <\/span>subscribed <\/span>meaning<\/span> (or significance)<\/span>, and it is social in character<\/span>.<\/span> Firstly,<\/span> subscribed <\/span>narrative <\/span>is<\/span> chronological<\/span> because <\/span>it <\/span>represen<\/span>ct<\/span>s<\/span> subscribed<\/span> sequence of events<\/span>. In this sense, the simplest definition of narrative<\/span> is a story with a beginning<\/span>,<\/span> a middle, and an end<\/span>.<\/span> Secondly,<\/span> it communicates the meaning of <\/span>events or experiences through the use of evaluative statements<\/span> (<\/span>i.e., <\/span>depend<\/span>s<\/span> on <\/span>the <\/span>meaning<\/span>s<\/span> of the <\/span>encompassing <\/span>actions and events<\/span>)<\/span>. <\/span>N<\/span>arrative<\/span>s<\/span> might then<\/span> render events meaningful, even without providing an explicit evaluation of those events, but simply by imposing beginnings and ends on what might otherwise be thought of as continuous <\/span>sequences<\/span>. <\/span>Thirdly,<\/span> subscribed <\/span>narrative <\/span>is<\/span> inherently social <\/span>as<\/span> it is<\/span> produced for a specific audience<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>he word narrative means \u201cto know\u201d and \u201cto tell\u201d<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>hus,<\/span> subscribed <\/span>narrative presuppose<\/span>s<\/span> an audience, a \u201cconversational space\u201d<\/span> to tell a story and the narrator needs at<\/span> subscribed<\/span> minimum the co-operation of a conversational partner<\/span>. These three features of narrative (temporal, meaningful, and social) <\/span>cannot be understood as wholly independent or as straight<\/span>forwardly separable. I<\/span>n particular, the meaning of events within a narrative derives both from their temporal ordering and from the social context in which the narrative is recounted. <\/span>In the social sciences, narrative<\/span>s<\/span> are<\/span> highly valued because <\/span>they<\/span> are<\/span> rooted in time, place, and personal experience<\/span>. They also<\/span> serve as a vehicle for understanding identity, human agency, and the embeddedness of individual lives in the broader culture. <\/span>What is key here is that narrative<\/span>s<\/span> do not seek to copy reality; rather <\/span>their <\/span>goal is to help make sense of that reality, bridging the emotional and the rational dimensions.<\/span><\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
