The term<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\"> is now applied <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\">across many <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\">hard and<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\">ocial <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\">ciences<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\">. It <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\">critically <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> and polic<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">ies<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> that make heterosexuality something natural, internally coherent, and morally superior to any other sexual identity<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">, orientation,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> and behaviour<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">It assumes gender and sexual binary as seemingly natural, as much as natural are considered traditional gender roles.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> As a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">naturalised<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> social norm, heteronormativity is also used to identify any sexually conservative narrative \u2013 from the more conservative, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">teocon<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">, and authoritarian positions to conservativism within progressive parties and movements \u2013 which openly contrasts the so-called \u201cgender ideology\u201d.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">Heteronormativity and (hetero)sexism are mostly equivalent, the first referring to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">subscribed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> universalised ideal to which everyone must adhere, the second to the discrimination that this imperative engenders. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">By critical intellectuals, activists and parties,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> heteronormativity is invoked when political action based on sex\/gender binary is taken against<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> lesbian and gay rights, let alone the rights<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> of intersex, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">transvestis<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">, and transgender people.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">Nevertheless, a new turn is taking place inside the populist far and extreme right<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> movements and parties (like Le Front National in France, Casa Pound and Fratelli <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">d\u2019Italia<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> in Italy) <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">which <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">declared themselves as open to the recognition of sexual minorities, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">as long as<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">se<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SpellingErrorHighlight SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">minoritised<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> components of the society <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">are<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> not challenging an idea of the national society as inherently heterosexual.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">In fact, heteronormativity is generally <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">mobilised<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> against not-heterosexual conduct, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">unless<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> performed as something which is subordinated to an individual\u2019s heterosexual public life and public stance. Therefore, h<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">eteronormativity is identified when<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> either<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> LGBTQ+ people<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> live a \u201cdouble life\u201d or<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">they <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">are<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> reproducing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> heteronormative gender roles<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\"> in their private life<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">, regardless their <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">more or less openly<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW188924444 BCX4\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"hgkelc\">assumed LGBTQ+ identity.
