T<\/span>he term <\/span>critically <\/span>refer<\/span>s<\/span> to the cooptation of women and gay agendas within the discourse on US nationalism<\/span>, anti-immigration,<\/span> and <\/span>the War on Terror<\/span> against the \u201cbarbarian\u201d attacks<\/span> that in 9\/11 and every day <\/span>\u201cthe <\/span>enemy<\/span>\u201d<\/span> engage<\/span>s<\/span> against<\/span> US way of Life, <\/span>democracy<\/span> and society.<\/span> Although <\/span>homonationalism<\/span> was already present in many Western countries\u2019 far right and conservative gay parties and movements, as a term <\/span>it<\/span> was coined in 2007 by US gender studies scholar Jasbir Puar<\/span>. <\/span>Generally, i<\/span>n<\/span> homonationalist<\/span> discourses<\/span>,<\/span> the enemy is the<\/span> immigrant other, especially Muslim migrants and nationals (<\/span>ejected from the democratic and white national imagined community) together with<\/span> their societies, state institutions and <\/span>history<\/span> at home<\/span>. They are labelled as inherently homophobic, sexist, transphobic and illiberal<\/span> and<\/span>,<\/span> as such<\/span>,<\/span> in <\/span>need to be contained at the frontier as well as <\/span>fought against in the<\/span>ir<\/span> countries of origin<\/span>.<\/span> Over time<\/span>, <\/span>the enemy <\/span>category it<\/span> has been expanded <\/span>to <\/span>include<\/span> all racialized immigrants <\/span>who are <\/span>characterised<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> as bringing \u2018chaos\u2019 into the safe space of a nation<\/span>,<\/span> which is<\/span>, in turn,<\/span> const<\/span>r<\/span>ued<\/span> as progressive, equal and just<\/span>,<\/span> regardless<\/span> of its<\/span> internal social divi<\/span>sions <\/span>brought by<\/span> the<\/span> enduring<\/span> legac<\/span>ies<\/span> of colonialism<\/span>,<\/span> slavery<\/span>,<\/span> an<\/span>d<\/span> state violence. <\/span>Since 2001, t<\/span>hese discourses have been appropriated by many political actors<\/span> far beyond the United States<\/span>, right and left-wing alik<\/span>e<\/span>.<\/span> Critical <\/span>scholars have<\/span> highlighted how <\/span>homonationalist<\/span> discourses are often paired with moral panic against an alleged \u201crace replacement<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d equating the threat<\/span> of<\/span> terrorism, social and economic <\/span>depauperati<\/span>on<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> migration driven <\/span>cultural change, with racial decadence. Although often <\/span>n<\/span>ot <\/span>openly<\/span>, <\/span>homonationalist<\/span> discourses are <\/span>intrinsically <\/span>white suprema<\/span>cist<\/span>.<\/span> By white supremacis<\/span>m<\/span> international scholarship means systemic and structural racism functional to cultural, social, <\/span>political<\/span> and economic dominance of the white <\/span>component<\/span> of the society.<\/span> More recently<\/span>, echoing Puar\u2019s elaboration of <\/span>homonationalism<\/span> and Gayatri C. Spivak<\/span>\u2019s seminal work<\/span> on anti-brown men colonial racism,<\/span> Sara Farris has coined the term \u201c<\/span>Femonationalism<\/span>\u201d to highlight the nationalist, colonial and racist implications of <\/span>Eurocentric<\/span> conservative and white feminist <\/span>discourses on Muslim migrant women as <\/span>welcomed <\/span>caregivers<\/span>, <\/span>discourses <\/span>mobilized against Islam and Muslim men<\/span> in contemporary Europe<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
