The book\u00a0Religion, Gender, and Populism in the Mediterranean,<\/em>\u00a0edited by Alberta Giorgi, J\u00falia Garraio and Teresa Toldy (Routledge, 2023), proposes a systematic and comparative analysis of the intersections of religion and gender in times of populism across the EU-Mediterranean. The chapters explore tensions and issues related to religion and gender in nations including Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Greece, Turkey, and in the case of Palestinian women. Shifting attention from the European Union to the Mediterranean area allows the inclusion of countries whose history is significantly interwoven, taking into account the legacies of colonialism, the effects of post-colonialism, and the role of the EU in relation to gender-related issues in particular. The volume investigates not only country-specific cases but highlights similarities and differences in the region and aims to understand how the interconnections influence the issues at stake. It draws together countries with non-Christian majoritarian religions, with different political regimes, and where feminism and women\u2019s movements have different shapes, histories, and relationships with religion.<\/p>\n

The chapters of the book are authored by J\u00falia Garraio, Teresa Toldy, Alexandre de Sousa Carvalho, In\u00eas Amaral, Sofia Jos\u00e9 Santos (chapter about\u00a0Portugal), Alberta Giorgi (chapter about Italy), Jadranka Rebeka Ani\u0107 (chapter about\u00a0Croatia), Adriana Zaharijevi\u0107, Zorana Antonijevi\u0107 (chapter about\u00a0Serbia), Zlatiborka Popov-Mom\u010dinovi\u0107, Amila \u017ddralovi\u0107 (chapter about\u00a0Bosnia-Herzegovina), Chara Karagiannopoulou, Niki Papageorgiou (chapter about\u00a0Greece), Bilge Yabanci, Chiara Maritato (chapter about\u00a0Turkey), Nahed Ashqar-Sharary and Sarab Abu-Rabia-Queder (chapter about\u00a0Palestinian women).<\/p>\n

Bio notes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ana Makhashvili\u00a0<\/strong>is a doctoral researcher in Media and Communication Studies working at the collaborative research center \u201cAffective Societies\u201d at the Freie Universitat Berlin, Germany. From 2019 till 2023, she worked on the project ‘Journalism and the Order of Emotions’, where she analyzed the Twitter discourse around refuge and migration in Germany and now continues her research as part of the project \u201cContested Order of Emotions: (Anti-)Feminist Discourses on Social Media\u201d. In her dissertation, she combines qualitative, quantitative, and automated methods to examine the role of emotions and affect in the formation of far-right publics on Twitter. Her latest publications include ‘Hijacking Solidarity: Affective Networking of Far-Right Publics on Twitter’ (Affective Formation of Publics.<\/em>\u00a0Places, Networks, and Media<\/em>, 2023) and ‘Challenging Journalistic Authority in the Networked Affective Dynamics of #Chemnitz’ (with D. Medeiros and M. Lunenborg,\u00a0Social Media + Society<\/em>, 2022).<\/p>\n

Maria Elena Indelicato<\/strong>\u00a0(she, her, hers)\u00a0is a\u00a0<\/span>CEEC FCT researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), University of Coimbra and\u00a0University of M\u00fcnster<\/span>\u00a0Visiting Scholar at the Department of English. She is also an\u00a0associate editor of the\u00a0Journal of Intercultural Studies<\/em>, and co-editor of the section \u2018Anti-Racism\/Mobilisations and Resistance\u2019\u00a0of the forthcoming\u00a0online\u00a0Routledge Encyclopaedia of Race and Racism,\u00a0<\/em>and team member of the FCT group project UNPOP.\u00a0<\/em>Besides her monograph\u00a0Australian New Migrants: International Students\u2019 History of Affective Encounters with the Border<\/em>\u00a0(2018), Indelicato has published in feminist, critical race and cultural studies journals such as\u00a0Outskirts: Feminisms along the Edge<\/em>,\u00a0Critical Race and Whiteness Studies e-Journal<\/em>,\u00a0Chinese Cinemas<\/em>,\u00a0Inter-Asia Cultural Studies<\/em>,\u00a0Paedagogica Historica<\/em>,\u00a0Transnational Cinemas<\/em>,\u00a0Feminist Review<\/em>,\u00a0Postcolonial Studies,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Interventions.
